I welcome the SC's judgement to appoint CEC & ECs on the advice of PM, LoP & CJI.
When 'autonomous bodies' are being robbed, this timely intervention by SC is crucial to protect the independence of ECI whose transparent functioning is indispensable for a vibrant Democracy.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin strongly welcomed the landmark verdict delivered by the Supreme Court of India mandating that the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners must be appointed on the joint advice of a committee comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Justice of India. Stalin characterized the historic judicial intervention as a vital safeguard designed to protect the Election Commission of India from executive capture.
The Chief Minister observed that autonomous regulatory and investigative bodies have increasingly faced political interference, severely eroding public confidence in the institutional foundations of Indian democracy. An independent and transparent Election Commission is indispensable for conducting free and fair elections, which constitute the very heartbeat of a vibrant parliamentary republic. Stalin commended the constitutional bench for reaffirming that the executive branch cannot exercise unchecked unilateral authority over premier constitutional arbiters.
Stalin emphasized that the verdict provides essential momentum to the collective struggle waged by regional parties to defend federalism and democratic checks and balances. He urged the Union government to implement the judicial ruling in letter and spirit, thereby ensuring that national electoral oversight operates with complete neutrality, transparency, and public trust.
