Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin commemorated the 200th anniversary of the historic Channar revolt, popularly known as the Tholseelai Porattam, during a massive public assembly held in Kanyakumari. The historic nineteenth-century uprising witnessed oppressed lower-caste women fiercely resisting oppressive feudal prohibitions to secure the right to cover their upper bodies with dignity. Stalin hailed the brave women whose collective defiance dismantled feudal arrogance, asserting that their struggle marked a foundational chapter in India's social justice history.
The Chief Minister observed that the bicentenary gathering serves not merely to celebrate a past triumph, but to remind society of the deep structural reforms wrought by rationalist reform movements. He pointed out that the social freedoms enjoyed today were not granted as benevolent charity, but were fought for and won through immense personal sacrifice. Stalin warned that reactionary elements still attempt to reintroduce caste hierarchies and undermine egalitarian progress across various forms.
Stalin reaffirmed that the Dravidian movement remains the resolute frontline defender of marginalized communities, vowing to eradicate lingering caste prejudices. He declared that his administration will persistently champion policies that guarantee complete social equality, human dignity, and educational opportunities for all.
