Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin commenced International Women's Day celebrations in Chennai by greeting women police personnel before participating in an annual commemorative event at Ethiraj College for Women. Addressing an enthusiastic gathering of students and faculty members, Stalin reflected on the profound social transformation that enabled generations of women across the state to attain leadership roles in administration, education, science, and governance.
The Chief Minister observed that the visible ascendancy of women in higher education and professional careers fulfills the egalitarian vision championed by social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy. He remarked that Periyar's pioneering self-respect movement dismantled oppressive patriarchal conventions, securing foundational rights including equal property inheritance and civic dignity. Stalin emphasized that educational institutions like Ethiraj College serve as vital engines sustaining that progressive legacy.
Reaffirming his administration's social philosophy, Stalin declared that International Women's Day must continually reinvigorate community commitment to gender equity. Under the Dravidian Model governance, Tamil Nadu has institutionalized pioneering welfare interventions, such as fare-free public bus travel and monthly financial assistance for college students. Stalin pledged that the government will continually expand educational infrastructure, ensuring every young woman accesses opportunities to achieve financial independence and personal self-reliance.
