Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the universal expansion of the pioneering 'Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme' to cover all 31,008 government primary schools across Tamil Nadu. Initially launched as a pilot program in select corporations, municipalities, and rural blocks, the initiative will now benefit approximately 1.7 million primary schoolchildren from classes one to five every school morning. The comprehensive expansion guarantees hot, nutritious morning meals to every student attending state-run primary schools.
The Chief Minister highlighted that independent evaluation studies showed notable increases in student attendance, reduced classroom fatigue, and significant improvements in childhood nutritional standards since the scheme's introduction. Stalin stated that hunger should never become a barrier to education, describing the provision of wholesome morning nutrition as an inviolable duty of the welfare state. The program relieves working parents of nutritional anxiety while encouraging regular schooling among underprivileged rural communities.
Stalin emphasized that the Breakfast Scheme carries forward the legacy of the historic Midday Meal Scheme pioneered by the Justice Party and expanded by K. Kamaraj and M. Karunanidhi. He declared that nourishing children's minds and bodies is the defining benchmark of the Dravidian Model of governance.
