Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin moved an unprecedented statutory resolution in the Legislative Assembly, urging the Union Government and the President of India to establish binding timeframes within which state Governors must decide on passed bills. Beginning a comprehensive three-part legislative address, Stalin asserted that elected state assemblies cannot be held hostage to the political whims or indefinite delays of appointed gubernatorial authorities. The resolution was passed with widespread support across party lines in the House.
Stalin highlighted that the office of the Governor was conceived by constitutional framers as an impartial dignitary acting solely on the aid and advice of elected state cabinets. However, the current functioning of Raj Bhavans across several non-BJP ruled states demonstrates an alarming tendency to usurp legislative authority by shelving crucial legislation. Stalin warned that such administrative obstruction paralyzes democratic decision-making and denies citizens the benefits of progressive social policies.
The Chief Minister affirmed that Tamil Nadu will consistently spearhead constitutional resistance against any erosion of state autonomy. He appealed to state legislatures nationwide to adopt similar resolutions, building collective pressure to preserve genuine federalism and legislative sovereignty.
