The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly adopted a historic resolution urging the President of India and the Union Government to issue appropriate and binding instructions to Governor R.N. Ravi. Concluding a three-part statement, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin noted that the assembly took this decisive step to halt the Governor's recurring delays in granting assent to bills duly passed by the elected legislature. The resolution urged federal authorities to ensure that Governors adhere strictly to constitutional boundaries and act in accordance with democratic conventions.
Stalin pointed out that repeatedly sitting on vital welfare and educational bills without assigning reasons directly undermines the legislative supremacy of the House. By holding up legislation indefinitely, the gubernatorial office infringes upon the rights of the state's citizens and disrupts executive governance. The resolution called for establishing a specific time frame within which Governors must give their assent to legislative measures.
The Chief Minister emphasized that Tamil Nadu's initiative is intended to defend the constitutional spirit of cooperative federalism. He urged the Union leadership to respect the will of elected state assemblies and prevent appointed gubernatorial authorities from operating as parallel power centers.
