Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin commemorated Transgender Persons Day by celebrating the progressive welfare foundations established by former Chief Minister Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi. Stalin recalled that Karunanidhi personally coined the respectful Tamil term 'Thirunangaiyar' to safeguard the community's dignity, replacing derogatory colloquialisms. Karunanidhi also established India's first Transgender Welfare Board, pioneering state-level welfare programs, identity documentation, and dedicated healthcare assistance for transgender citizens across Tamil Nadu.
Building on that historic legacy, Stalin reiterated that the Dravidian Model administration remains committed to securing full socioeconomic inclusion and equal rights for all transgender individuals. The state government provides subsidized housing, monthly pension assistance, specialized medical treatments, and vocational self-employment training to support independent livelihoods. Stalin stressed that public policies must continuously eliminate discrimination, foster workplace acceptance, and expand educational access across urban and rural institutions alike.
Stalin affirmed that true social justice requires uplifting vulnerable communities that have endured historical marginalization and prejudice. He pledged that Tamil Nadu will consistently enact progressive measures to guarantee every transgender person lives with absolute safety, legal protection, self-respect, and equal opportunity throughout their lives.
