Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin held an extensive telephonic conversation with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to deliberate on growing challenges to Indian federalism caused by the partisan conduct of Governors in non-BJP ruled states. Banerjee conveyed full solidarity and deep admiration for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly's resolution demanding time limits for gubernatorial assent on passed bills, endorsing Stalin's proactive defense of state legislative autonomy.

During their discussion, the West Bengal Chief Minister recommended convening an urgent conclave of non-BJP Chief Ministers to formulate a joint legal and political strategy. Stalin welcomed the proposal, underscoring that Governors across various states have been systematically obstructing duly enacted legislations, paralyzing elected state administrations, and functioning as ideological instruments of the Union government rather than neutral constitutional heads.

Stalin affirmed that state autonomy is the lifeblood of Indian democracy and cannot be subjugated to centralizing pressures. Invoking the historic Dravidian rallying cry of spreading democratic resistance, the Chief Minister pledged that Tamil Nadu will actively coordinate with progressive regional leaders across India to defend the constitutional rights of elected state legislatures against unauthorized gubernatorial interference.
