Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced on the floor of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly that the state government will erect a life-size statue of former Prime Minister V.P. Singh in Chennai. Stalin described V.P. Singh as a towering champion of the oppressed whose monumental decision in 1990 to implement the recommendations of the Mandal Commission ignited an unprecedented socio-political revolution across independent India.
The Chief Minister emphasized that V.P. Singh demonstrated extraordinary political bravery by sacrificing his prime ministerial chair rather than compromising on providing twenty-seven percent reservation in central government jobs for Other Backward Classes. Stalin highlighted the profound ideological and personal solidarity shared between V.P. Singh and former DMK president Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, recalling how Tamil Nadu's Dravidian leadership actively supported and celebrated that historic social justice milestone.
Stalin affirmed that honoring V.P. Singh with a permanent memorial in Chennai is an act of deep gratitude from the people of Tamil Nadu. He pledged that the Dravidian Model administration will continue championing nationwide caste censuses and proportional reservation, keeping V.P. Singh's egalitarian vision alive for generations to come.
