It was a pleasure to meet my long-time friend and Singapore's Minister for Transport and Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations Thiru S. Iswaran.

We had already met when I had visited Singapore earlier as the Mayor of Chennai and then as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. During his recent visit to India last year, we exchanged our ideas to strengthen the cultural and economic ties between Tamil Nadu and Singapore.

Today, I am glad that our discussions have fructified into meaningful MoUs. I have also extended him my warm invitation to the Global Investors Meet 2024 in Chennai which he had graciously accepted. I look forward to hosting him.

Editorial context

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin held high-level bilateral discussions in Singapore with S. Iswaran, Singapore's Minister for Transport and Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations. Stalin warmly recalled his longstanding personal friendship with Minister Iswaran, reminiscing about previous official interactions during his tenures as Mayor of Chennai and Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

The two leaders reviewed progress on collaborative initiatives discussed during Minister Iswaran's visit to Tamil Nadu the previous year, focusing on strengthening trade ties, industrial logistics, and sustainable urban transport solutions. Stalin expressed immense satisfaction that these fruitful bilateral dialogues culminated in the formal signing of key memorandums of understanding between Singaporean entities and the state government. The agreements cover vital development areas, including industrial park modernization, green port technology, and specialized technical skill development for local youth across diverse industrial sectors.

Stalin extended a warm personal invitation to Minister Iswaran to participate as an honored dignitary at the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet in Chennai in January 2024. The Chief Minister noted that expanding partnerships with Singapore will significantly accelerate Tamil Nadu's economic trajectory toward achieving a one-trillion-dollar economy.
