Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated a massive environmental initiative to plant five lakh tree saplings across Tamil Nadu, commencing the drive at the Highways Research Station campus in Guindy, Chennai. Stalin recalled the memorable environmental maxim coined by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi: if we nurture trees, trees will nurture us, which famously greets visitors at Karunanidhi's Gopalapuram residence. The plantation drive was launched as part of the centenary commemorative initiatives dedicated to environmental conservation.
The Chief Minister planted the first sapling on campus, emphasizing that expanding forest cover and urban green spaces forms an integral component of the Green Tamil Nadu Mission. Stalin explained that planting native shade and fruit-bearing trees along highways, public institutions, and riverbanks mitigates heat island effects and combats climate vulnerability. Highways and environment department officials committed to monitoring sapling survival through geo-tagging systems.
Stalin called upon students, voluntary organizations, and community groups to take active responsibility for planting and preserving trees in their neighborhoods. He affirmed that creating enduring green public assets ensures healthy, sustainable living standards for future generations of citizens.
