Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin shared insights from his extensive interview published in The Hindu, articulating the DMK's principled stance on democratic governance and federal autonomy. Stalin sharply criticized the systematic and unconstitutional conduct of Governor R.N. Ravi, pointing out that the titular office is being wielded to obstruct the functioning of an elected state administration and stall bills passed by the Legislative Assembly. He affirmed that ministers serve at the pleasure of the elected Chief Minister according to constitutional convention.

The Chief Minister drew comparisons between administrative interference in Tamil Nadu and political instability engineered by the Bharatiya Janata Party in Maharashtra and other non-BJP ruled states. He observed that the ruling regime at the Centre is deploying central agencies, gubernatorial offices, and legislative inducements to fracture regional political stability and undermine opposition parties. Stalin maintained that such maneuvers subvert the spirit of democratic representation and violate core constitutional norms.

Stalin asserted that the DMK will persistently champion state rights, constitutional propriety, and secular governance. He expressed conviction that progressive forces will resist political intimidation and emerge victorious in the 2024 general elections.
