Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed an urgent formal appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the dire economic crisis confronting cotton cultivators across Tamil Nadu due to a severe domestic price crash. Stalin pointed out that sharp drops in raw cotton open-market rates have pushed agriculturalists into heavy financial distress, leaving them unable to recover even basic cultivation investments. He stressed that without rapid state-backed market intervention, thousands of farming families across central and western districts face severe insolvency.
To resolve the crisis, the Chief Minister requested the Prime Minister to direct the Cotton Corporation of India to immediately open procurement centers across Tamil Nadu. Furthermore, Stalin urged the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to advance the effective date of the Minimum Support Price for cotton to June 1 each year, instead of waiting for the traditional October kharif procurement calendar. He explained that early sowing cycles in southern regions make June implementation vital.
Stalin affirmed that timely institutional procurement at statutory support prices is essential to shield farmers from exploitative private trading cartels. He urged immediate central action to preserve agricultural livelihoods.
