Hon'ble @PMOIndia, I request your attention to the urgent issue of copra procurement in Tamil Nadu. Coconut growers across the state are seeking an increase in the procurement target under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) of the Government of India. I urge you to instruct the concerned ministry to enhance the quantity ceiling from 25% to 40% and the procurement target from 56,000 MT to 90,000 MT for Tamil Nadu. This will stabilise the market price of copra and benefit our coconut growers.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin sent an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting immediate central intervention to support distressed coconut farmers across the state. Stalin pointed out that plummeting copra open-market prices have inflicted severe financial distress on agrarian households. He explained that although coconut growers have actively petitioned for procurement under the central Price Support Scheme, current administrative targets remain inadequate to absorb surplus regional production and stabilize tumbling open-market values.

To ensure remunerative returns for cultivators, the Chief Minister urged the Union government to instruct the Ministry of Agriculture to enhance the statutory procurement ceiling from 25 percent to 40 percent of total production. Additionally, Stalin requested an immediate upward revision of Tamil Nadu's copra procurement allocation from 56,000 metric tonnes to 90,000 metric tonnes. He emphasized that raising central quotas will prevent distressed distress sales to commercial intermediaries.

Stalin affirmed that the state government is actively deploying its cooperative network and primary societies to expedite procurement across coconut-producing districts. He urged the Prime Minister to approve the enhanced procurement targets promptly to safeguard agricultural livelihoods and rural financial security.
