#UCCDividesIndia

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin voiced resolute opposition to proposals seeking the nationwide implementation of a Uniform Civil Code, warning that such measures threaten India's pluralistic fabric and constitutional federalism. Stalin stated that any coercive effort to enforce legal uniformity disregards centuries of distinct cultural traditions, threatening the unique religious and customary identities of tribal communities and religious minorities. He asserted that imposing a standardized personal law framework seeks to construct an artificial, majoritarian social order that fractures communal harmony.

The Chief Minister argued that constitutional drafters deliberately preserved diversity by respecting personal laws and local customs across different states and communities. Rather than attempting to homogenize personal practices through administrative fiat, Stalin contended that democratic governance must focus on ensuring equal socioeconomic opportunities, universal rights, and non-discriminatory access to education and employment for all citizens. He highlighted that India's unity derives strength from celebrating mutual coexistence rather than suppressing diversity.

Stalin called upon the Union government to abandon moves to impose the Uniform Civil Code, stressing that federal stability requires absolute respect for regional diversity. He affirmed that Tamil Nadu will consistently resist divisive policies.
