Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin dispatched an official memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the eve of Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe's diplomatic visit to New Delhi. Stalin urged the Prime Minister to place critical issues concerning Tamil welfare at the forefront of bilateral discussions, specifically demanding the retrieval of Katchatheevu island to secure the traditional fishing rights and safety of Tamil Nadu coastal fishermen.

The Chief Minister stressed that the recurring harassment, physical assaults, and arbitrary arrests of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy in their historic fishing waters demand a definitive diplomatic solution. Stalin also pressed the Union Government to advocate firmly for meaningful political devolution of powers to the Tamil-speaking population in Sri Lanka, fulfilling their long-cherished democratic aspirations for equal dignity, land rights, linguistic equality, and self-administration under the 13th Amendment framework.

Stalin reiterated that Tamil Nadu expects the Union Government to protect regional maritime interests and ensure lasting justice for Sri Lankan Tamils. He affirmed that securing fishermen's livelihoods and defending Tamil diaspora rights remain foundational foreign policy priorities for the state government.
