Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inspected ongoing stormwater drain network construction across multiple localities in Chennai to assess monsoon preparedness firsthand. Stalin recalled that after assuming office, his administration confronted severe pandemic challenges and immediately initiated comprehensive flood mitigation reforms. Guided by recommendations from the expert advisory committee led by retired administrator Thiruppugazh, the government engineered comprehensive underground drainage networks to address persistent waterlogging across vulnerable neighbourhoods throughout the metropolitan zone.
The Chief Minister noted that the efficacy of these systematic infrastructure works was clearly demonstrated during recent heavy rains, when rainwater drained rapidly within hours from areas that previously remained submerged for days. Both citizens and media reports highlighted the noticeable transformation in urban drainage efficiency. During the inspection, Stalin evaluated progress on remaining canal interlinking projects, culvert widening, and micro-drainage channels, directing engineering teams to adhere to strict quality standards and completion deadlines without delay.
Stalin affirmed that the ultimate objective is establishing Chennai as a premier national benchmark in urban flood prevention and climate resilience. He assured residents that proactive municipal planning will protect homes, infrastructure, and commercial hubs from monsoon inundation.
