Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laid the foundation stone for South Asia's largest sea water reverse osmosis desalination plant at Perur along the East Coast Road, marking a decisive milestone in securing metropolitan Chennai's long-term water independence. Executed by Chennai Metrowater in technical and financial collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the ambitious infrastructure project entails a public investment of 4,276.4 crore rupees.

The advanced desalination facility will possess a daily treatment capacity of 400 million litres of potable water and is scheduled for operational commissioning by December 2026. Stalin emphasized that the project will permanently resolve critical drinking water requirements for burgeoning residential and commercial corridors, including Old Mahabalipuram Road, East Coast Road, and newly incorporated southern sectors under the Greater Chennai Corporation.

The Chief Minister stressed that climate change and unpredictable monsoon patterns necessitate proactive, sustainable urban water management solutions. He commended the municipal administration and engineering teams for executing resilient infrastructure that safeguards civic health, supports industrial growth, and fosters an environmentally sustainable future for generations of urban citizens.

Stalin affirmed that modernizing coastal municipal utilities ensures equitable access to clean drinking water, setting a stellar national benchmark in urban resilience.
