Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed profound gratitude for the widespread public acclaim greeting his Independence Day policy announcement establishing a dedicated Welfare Board for unorganized gig and platform workers. Stalin highlighted that delivery personnel, app-based drivers, and freelance gig workers form an indispensable backbone of modern urban commerce, yet have long operated without formal institutional safety nets, accident insurance, or retirement security.

Drawing inspiration from the centenary legacy of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who pioneered welfare boards for manual laborers, rickshaw pullers, and marginalized artisans, Stalin stated that extending state protection to gig workers honors this compassionate Dravidian tradition. He emphasized that the proposed welfare board will register gig workers, provide life and disability insurance coverage, institutionalize grievance redressal mechanisms, and extend welfare assistance during financial emergencies.

Stalin affirmed that economic modernization must proceed hand-in-hand with labor dignity and statutory protections. He underscored that his administration remains dedicated to uplifting all labor sectors, ensuring that technological progress creates inclusive security rather than precarious exploitation for working citizens across Tamil Nadu, fostering sustainable economic empowerment and dignified livelihoods for all gig workers.
