The Union BJP Government's push for 'One Nation - One Election' is a blatant attempt to undermine our federal structure. It's a move towards centralised power that goes against the essence of #INDIA, a union of states. This abrupt announcement and the subsequent high-level committee formation only fuel suspicions. #OneNationOneElection is a recipe for #dictatorship, not #democracy.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Union BJP government's aggressive push for the 'One Nation - One Election' proposal, characterizing the sudden appointment of a high-level committee as a blatant assault on India's federal structure. Stalin pointed out that India is fundamentally defined under the Constitution as a Union of States, and attempting to synchronize national and state legislative cycles undermines regional autonomy and parliamentary democracy.

The Chief Minister cautioned that simultaneous elections would dilute localized regional issues, force unnatural curtailments or extensions of democratically elected state assemblies, and concentrate disproportionate power within central institutions. He stressed that such abrupt policy announcements fuel legitimate public apprehension regarding an impending drift toward authoritarian governance. Stalin asserted that democratic responsiveness depends upon robust federal checks and balances, which would be severely weakened under a rigid electoral monolith.

Stalin urged opposition parties and democratic citizens nationwide to reject this regressive proposal in unison. He reiterated that diverse state mandates represent the true spirit of Indian democracy and cannot be subordinated to unitary administrative convenience. The Chief Minister affirmed that Tamil Nadu will firmly resist any legislative measures that threaten constitutional federalism.
