Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin hailed the historic appointment of qualified women as temple priests by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, ending centuries of gender discrimination at the sanctum sanctorum. Stalin observed that while women have achieved distinction as commercial pilots and space scientists, archaic social traditions historically barred them from performing sacred rituals, even within temples dedicated to female deities.
The Chief Minister declared that this transformative reform successfully removes the persistent thorn from the heart of social reformer Thanthai Periyar. Under the Dravidian Model governance, the state previously enacted policies appointing trained individuals of all castes as temple archakas, dismantling hereditary and caste monopolies. Stalin emphasized that extending this religious inclusivity to women candidates marks a monumental victory for gender equality, human dignity, and progressive social justice.
Stalin commended HR&CE Minister P.K. Sekarbabu and departmental officers for implementing comprehensive scriptural training programs in state-run archakar academies. He affirmed that Tamil Nadu temples now embody universal spiritual egalitarianism where merit and devotion prevail over discriminatory customs. The Chief Minister concluded that Tamil Nadu continues leading the nation toward progressive social emancipation.
