The recent NMC restriction on new medical colleges is another attempt to encroach upon the rights of States!
Why penalise the States that have tirelessly built their strong public health infrastructure over decades? Is it fair to deprive backward districts from getting tertiary healthcare at new medical colleges? This step from NMC could severely limit the future growth of both public and private healthcare services in states like Tamil Nadu.
I urge Hon’ble PM @PMOIndia to reconsider this move.
Every district deserves best health care for the poor! Every State should be allowed to prosper to its full potential!!

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to revoke the National Medical Commission's arbitrary guideline capping medical college seats at 100 per 10 lakh population. Stalin argued that this regressive regulation directly encroaches upon state autonomy and unfairly penalizes progressive states that have invested substantial public resources over decades to build world-class healthcare infrastructure.
The Chief Minister questioned the justice of depriving backward and rural districts of modern tertiary healthcare institutions simply because a state had already surpassed basic national averages. He emphasized that the NMC directive would severely restrict future expansion in both public and private medical education, creating an artificial barrier against regional health investments in states like Tamil Nadu.
Stalin maintained that every district deserves advanced tertiary medical care for poor and working-class families, and every state must be permitted to prosper to its full institutional potential. Urging the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to reconsider the notification immediately, the Chief Minister reaffirmed Tamil Nadu's commitment to defending decentralized federal rights and advancing public health infrastructure for all citizens across regional borders.
