Today marks a memorable day!
We dedicate 7th October every year as #NilgiriTahrDay in honour of Dr E.R.C. Davidar whose Birthday falls on this day.
Dr Davidar pioneered one of the first studies on #NilgiriTahr, the State animal of Tamil Nadu in 1975. The Nilgiris Tahr Project will be launched by me on 12th October 2023.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin declared that October 7 will be observed annually as Nilgiri Tahr Day to honor the birth anniversary of pioneering wildlife researcher Dr. E.R.C. Davidar. Dr. Davidar conducted the first systematic census and ecological assessment of the Nilgiri Tahr, Tamil Nadu's state animal, in 1975, laying the scientific foundation for modern mountain ungulate conservation.
Stalin also announced that he will formally launch Project Nilgiri Tahr on October 12, 2023, marking a milestone in state-led ecological conservation. With an outlay of twenty-five crore rupees, the initiative focuses on radio-telemetry studies, habitat restoration, ecological monitoring, and eco-tourism awareness in the Western Ghats. The project aims to rebuild fragmented habitats and safeguard the endangered herbivore species against climate change and poaching risks.
The Chief Minister stressed that protecting indigenous flora and fauna is central to the state's environmental vision. He praised the Tamil Nadu Forest Department for implementing targeted ecological initiatives that balance biodiversity protection with sustainable habitat management. Stalin reaffirmed that Tamil Nadu continues to lead Indian conservation efforts through forward-thinking wildlife policies and empirical scientific backing.
