Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed the Legislative Assembly during a live session, tabling a special resolution to defend the state's legitimate water rights in the Cauvery basin. Stalin condemned the Karnataka government's persistent refusal to release allocated water volumes, which has severely disrupted kuruvai and samba paddy cultivation across the fertile delta belt.

In his legislative speech, Stalin called upon the Union government to direct Karnataka authorities to abide strictly by the decisions of the Cauvery Water Management Authority and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee. He highlighted that despite favorable judicial verdicts from the Supreme Court, delta farmers continue to suffer because of persistent non-compliance by the upper riparian state.

The Chief Minister commended all political parties in the Assembly for setting aside differences to support the resolution unanimously. He reiterated that safeguarding Cauvery water is an existential necessity for Tamil Nadu's rural economy, drinking water supply, and agrarian livelihood. Stalin pledged that his government will pursue every available constitutional avenue, including legal appeals and direct representations to the Prime Minister, to secure complete hydrological justice for Tamil Nadu.
