Chief Minister M.K. Stalin made a historic policy announcement in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, unveiling state-level honors and memorial initiatives to commemorate the peerless legacy of legendary agricultural scientist Dr. M.S. Swaminathan. Stalin recalled that when post-independence India faced devastating famines and looked to international aid for basic grain shipments, Dr. Swaminathan's pioneering scientific leadership in developing high-yielding crop varieties catalyzed the Green Revolution, transforming India into a self-reliant agricultural powerhouse.
The Chief Minister highlighted Swaminathan's enduring connection with Tamil Nadu and his lifelong dedication to farmer welfare, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and ecological harmony. Stalin announced the institution of a prestigious annual state agricultural award and research chair in Dr. Swaminathan's name to inspire upcoming agricultural scientists and farming innovators. He also detailed financial allocations to support rural women and smallholders through sustainable farming techniques championed by the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation.
Stalin affirmed that honoring Dr. Swaminathan is an act of profound national gratitude. He reiterated that the Dravidian Model administration remains deeply committed to farmer welfare, scientific agriculture, and food security for every household across Tamil Nadu.
