Editorial context

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin shared an erudite, fact-filled address delivered by Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu on the floor of the Legislative Assembly, exposing the Union BJP government's severe fiscal discrimination against Tamil Nadu. Commending the Finance Minister's rigorous analysis, Stalin emphasized that official budgetary statistics incontrovertibly reveal how the Union government penalizes progressive, economically prosperous states by drastically reducing their rightful share of central tax devolutions.

Thennarasu's legislative speech documented that for every single rupee Tamil Nadu contributes to the Union exchequer, the state receives back merely 29 paise in central tax sharing, whereas several non-performing northern states receive well over two to three rupees for every rupee contributed. This glaring disparity severely constrains Tamil Nadu's fiscal maneuvering space while financing nationwide development. The speech also laid bare the Union government's increasing reliance on special cesses and surcharges that are deliberately withheld from the divisible tax pool shared with states.

Stalin affirmed that Tamil Nadu's demand is rooted strictly in fairness and constitutional federalism. He urged citizens across India to recognize how unfair financial centralization undermines state autonomy and cripples essential regional welfare spending.
