Editorial context

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin conveyed a formal, unanimous appeal on behalf of the citizens of Tamil Nadu to President Droupadi Murmu, seeking immediate presidential assent for the Tamil Nadu Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill, which exempts the state from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Stalin emphasized that lakhs of deserving students and distressed families are anxiously awaiting the constitutional resolution of this long-pending legislative measure.

The Chief Minister articulated that NEET disproportionately disadvantages rural students, government school pupils, and marginalized socio-economic communities who lack the financial means to afford expensive private commercial coaching academies. He reminded the President that the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed the exemption bill twice, reflecting the collective democratic will and constitutional prerogative of the state to determine medical admission criteria based on school qualifying examinations.

Stalin asserted that doing away with NEET is central to Tamil Nadu's enduring quest for equitable social justice and accessible healthcare. He urged the President to respect the state assembly's constitutional mandate without further delay, assuring that his government will remain steadfast until justice is secured for Tamil Nadu's aspiring medical students.
