Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin released the third episode of his multilingual podcast series #Speaking4India, presenting a trenchant defense of state autonomy and federal democracy. Addressing national audiences, Stalin critiqued the Union government's hostility toward cooperative federalism, spotlighting the sharp contradiction between Narendra Modi's vigorous advocacy for state rights as Gujarat Chief Minister and his centralized governing practices as Prime Minister.

A central focus of the address was the systematic misuse of Raj Bhavans across opposition-governed states. Stalin condemned non-elected Governors for transforming constitutional residences into political party offices and deliberately blocking bills passed by democratically elected state assemblies. He argued that such anti-democratic maneuvers paralyze administrative governance, disrespect legislative mandates, and mock the will of regional electorates.

Ahead of crucial assembly elections in five states, Stalin urged citizens to reject authoritarian centralization and vote to safeguard India's diverse constitutional architecture. He emphasized that genuine national unity thrives only when state governments possess sufficient legislative, financial, and policy independence. Stalin affirmed that Tamil Nadu will continue spearheading the collective struggle to dismantle colonial vestiges like gubernatorial vetoes and restore authentic federalism across the republic.
