In the recent episode of my #Speaking4India podcast series, I spoke about how Tamil Nadu has been unfairly treated in the fund devolutions from the Union and how we continue to be shortchanged despite our significant contributions to the nation.

An insightful article in today's @timesofindia elaborates on the same issue. Read more to understand the importance of fiscal autonomy for states and the need for a more progressive approach in sharing resources.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin renewed his demand for equitable fiscal federalism, pointing out that Tamil Nadu continues to be severely shortchanged in tax revenue devolutions from the Union government. Referring to points raised in his #Speaking4India podcast series, Stalin cited an analytical article in The Times of India that exposed the growing imbalance in financial resource sharing between central authorities and productive states.

Stalin argued that states generating substantial economic productivity and revenue for the national exchequer receive disproportionately low financial returns from the Union. This regressive fiscal policy constrains state budgets, penalizes progressive administrative performance, and undermines regional development priorities. The Chief Minister underlined that authentic federalism requires fiscal autonomy, enabling states to finance essential health, education, and social infrastructure without perpetual central dependency.

Calling for systemic reform in resource distribution mechanisms, Stalin urged national policymakers and citizens across India to recognize that strong states constitute a resilient union. He reiterated that the Union government must adopt a progressive, transparent allocation model that rewards administrative efficiency, fosters regional parity, and respects the constitutional right of state governments to manage their socioeconomic destiny.
