Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin unveiled a commemorative bronze statue of Rao Bahadur Cruz Fernandez, revered as the Father of Thoothukudi District, celebrating his visionary civic leadership and enduring contributions to public health. Stalin recalled that when Thoothukudi suffered from catastrophic drinking water scarcity in 1927, Fernandez demonstrated extraordinary engineering and administrative foresight by designing and executing a pipeline scheme to bring fresh water from the Thamirabarani river directly to town residents.

Stalin praised Fernandez for his monumental dedication to the welfare of coastal communities, noting that his pioneering water supply scheme permanently relieved thousands of families from waterborne epidemics and acute drought. By institutionalizing municipal water infrastructure nearly a century ago, Fernandez set an exemplary benchmark for public administration and compassionate municipal service that continues to inspire modern urban planning.

Accompanied by parliamentarian Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and state ministers, Stalin stated that honoring pioneers who dedicated their lives to people’s welfare is a hallmark of the Dravidian movement. He affirmed that the government remains dedicated to advancing water security across southern districts through modern desiltation, river rejuvenation, and comprehensive piped drinking water networks.
