Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin delivered a commemorative address during the ceremonial unveiling of former Prime Minister V.P. Singh’s statue on the historic grounds of Presidency College in Chennai. Stalin described V.P. Singh as a fearless crusader for social equality who transformed Indian democracy by enforcing the Mandal Commission recommendations, ensuring affirmative action in central government jobs for Other Backward Classes across India.
Stalin recalled that Dravidian movement stalwarts, particularly former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, shared an intimate ideological bond with V.P. Singh. When anti-reservation forces created immense political turmoil, Singh chose to stand unshakeably with oppressed backward classes rather than sacrifice his foundational principles to preserve power. Installing his memorial statue in Tamil Nadu symbolizes the eternal gratitude of a progressive society toward a truly courageous national statesman.
The Chief Minister stressed that V.P. Singh’s legacy must inspire contemporary struggles for an equitable society. He reiterated the state government’s demand for a comprehensive nationwide caste census and proportional representation across all public sectors. Stalin affirmed that Tamil Nadu will continue leading the national struggle for federal autonomy, backward class rights, and social justice, carrying forward V.P. Singh's enduring mission.
