Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin assessed urban drainage performance across Chennai following more than two consecutive weeks of persistent monsoon downpours. Stalin observed that widespread stormwater drain construction and maintenance works completed by civic agencies prevented severe waterlogging across most city neighborhoods, allowing urban life to proceed without extensive disruptions.
Acknowledging that continuous precipitation led to localized water accumulation in certain low-lying zones, Stalin instructed municipal engineers, sanitation crews, and disaster response teams to deploy heavy-duty motor pumps and accelerate water removal. Officials were directed to monitor flood-prone junctions constantly, clear storm drain silt catches, inspect pumping stations, and maintain uninterrupted vehicular accessibility across arterial highways and neighborhood residential streets.
To facilitate prompt public assistance and grievance redressal, the Chief Minister circulated multiple municipal emergency contact channels. Residents in Chennai were encouraged to register waterlogging complaints through the Greater Chennai Corporation round-the-clock helpline 1913, landline numbers 044-25619204, 044-25619206, and 044-25619207, or through the dedicated WhatsApp portal at 9445477205. Stalin reiterated that municipal authorities remain fully responsive on the ground, ensuring rapid grievance resolution and proactive stormwater management throughout the North-East monsoon season.
