Met with the Central Team to address the severe impact of #CycloneMichaung on Chennai and adjoining districts. We've submitted a comprehensive memorandum seeking Rs 7,033 Cr as interim relief and Rs 12,659 Cr as permanent relief.

The devastation has affected the lives of millions, causing extensive damage to public infrastructure. Our primary focus is on the urgent restoration of crucial elements such as roads and power infrastructure, including electric poles, transformers, and substations.

I am optimistic that the Union Government representatives will carefully consider our request and recommend the approval of the requested funds. These resources are not just financial aid; they are the lifeline for Chennai's recovery and rebuilding process.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin met with the Inter-Ministerial Central Team deputed to assess the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Michaung in Chennai and adjoining coastal districts. Submitting a detailed, comprehensive memorandum, Stalin requested 7,033 crore rupees as interim relief to fund urgent restoration work and 12,659 crore rupees for permanent flood mitigation and long-term infrastructure reconstruction.

The Chief Minister stressed that unprecedented storm downpours impacted the daily lives of millions, inflicting severe structural damages on public assets. He highlighted that state priority focuses on the urgent rehabilitation of damaged road networks and critical electrical infrastructure, including thousands of electric poles, transformers, and electrical substations that were submerged or ruined by turbulent floodwaters.

Expressing optimism that the Union Government delegation would consider Tamil Nadu's representations favorably, Stalin underscored that the requested central funds are not mere financial assistance, but the indispensable lifeline for Chennai's rapid recovery and resilient rebuilding. He called for prompt central approvals without bureaucratic delays, reiterating that swift financial partnership between the Union and the State is essential to safeguard urban resilience against intensifying extreme climate disasters.
