Hon'ble Prime Minister Thiru. @narendramodi called me to inquire about the unprecedented floods in Southern Tamil Nadu, immediately after #CycloneMichaung.
I have explained to him the massive rescue and relief efforts undertaken by the State government, despite resource constraints, and sought immediate financial support from the Union government.
Hon'ble Prime Minister has assured the support of the Union government to overcome these twin calamities and conveyed that he has deputed Hon'ble Union Finance Minister Tmt. @nsitharaman to assess the flood situation.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a telephone conversation regarding the unprecedented devastation caused by historic torrential downpours in southern Tamil Nadu, occurring immediately after Cyclone Michaung. Stalin detailed the extraordinary scale of rescue and relief operations mounted by state administration, ministers, and armed forces across Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanniyakumari districts despite severe state budgetary constraints. He demanded immediate, substantial central financial support from national disaster funds.
The Chief Minister noted that Prime Minister Modi assured full Union government assistance to overcome these twin climatic calamities and communicated that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had been deputed to assess the ground reality firsthand. Stalin reiterated that recurring climate disasters severely stress state finances, necessitating prompt, non-partisan financial disbursements from the Centre without administrative delays.
Stalin affirmed that the Tamil Nadu government mobilized all available administrative and financial resources to deliver immediate cash relief and restore vital utilities. He expressed confidence that the Union government would honor its constitutional obligations by releasing adequate emergency reconstruction funds to safeguard affected citizens and rebuild damaged rural infrastructure comprehensively.
