Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the Chennai Sangamam Namma Ooru Thiruvizha 2024 folk art festival by beating the traditional murasu drum amid resounding tharai and thappattam rhythms. The grand cultural festival spans eighteen public parks and open grounds across Chennai, featuring evening performances from 6 PM to 9 PM. Stalin urged parents and families to attend the open-air events with their children to introduce the younger generation to authentic native folk art forms.
Stalin observed that grassroots folk traditions represent the living soul, resilience, and unvarnished creative genius of Tamil working people. By decentralizing classical and folk arts from elite auditoriums into accessible public neighborhood parks, Chennai Sangamam democratizes cultural enjoyment and provides dignified performance platforms for hundreds of traditional rural artists. Performers from across rural districts showcase percussion, street theater, and ancient dances.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed that the Dravidian Model government actively protects, patronizes, and popularizes indigenous folk traditions facing commercial marginalization. He highlighted that celebrating rural performing arts strengthens cultural pride, fosters social cohesion, and keeps Tamil Nadu's multifaceted cultural heritage dynamic, inclusive, and accessible to all urban citizens.
