Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin flagged off the first batch of 100 advanced BS-VI low-emission passenger buses in Chennai, initiating a comprehensive modernization drive for state transport undertakings. Stalin recalled that on October 19, 2022, he announced on the floor of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly under Rule 110 that the government would purchase one thousand new buses to fulfill expanding commuter requirements across rural and urban routes.

Expanding upon that statutory announcement, the administration sanctioned the procurement of 1,666 modern BS-VI buses at an outlay of 634.99 crore rupees. The Chief Minister confirmed that the remaining 1,566 buses will enter active commercial service across regional transport divisions over the next two months. Stalin appealed directly to the commuting public to treat public transport vehicles with the same care and cleanliness as personal family vehicles, ensuring reliable travel experiences for all citizens.

The Chief Minister affirmed that efficient public transportation remains a cornerstone of the Dravidian Model's inclusive social welfare governance, complementing the universal free bus travel scheme for women. He reiterated that modernizing transport fleets expands rural accessibility and reduces regional carbon emissions.
