Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene directly to clear the prolonged administrative delays obstructing Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project. Stalin stressed that the persistent delay in central cabinet approval and equitable equity funding has placed an immense financial strain on Tamil Nadu's state exchequer. With the project spanning 118.9 kilometers across three corridors, timely central financial matching is indispensable to completing this vital public transit network without cost escalations.

The Chief Minister pointed out that the Chennai Metro serves as a transformative lifeline for urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion, curbing vehicular emissions, and facilitating seamless transit for millions of daily commuters. While the state government continued executing foundational tunneling and viaduct civil works by mobilizing state resources and external loans, the absence of matching central contributions risks derailing scheduled commissioning milestones. Stalin emphasized that cooperative federalism requires the Union government to support major urban transit projects equitably without partisan discrimination.

Stalin urged the Prime Minister to accord immediate central sanction and disburse rightful financial shares for Chennai's dream transit infrastructure. He reaffirmed his government's resolve to deliver world-class sustainable mobility for Chennai's expanding metropolitan population.
