Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin hailed the historic judgment delivered by the Supreme Court of India dismissing the appeals of Vedanta and upholding the permanent closure of the Sterlite copper plant in Thoothukudi. Stalin declared that this historic judicial verdict represents a magnificent triumph for the courageous people of Thoothukudi, who waged a protracted grassroots struggle against corporate pollution, as well as an unyielding victory for the state government's robust legal defense.
The Chief Minister noted that under his administration, the state government presented irrefutable scientific evidence and environmental impact assessments demonstrating persistent violations of pollution control norms and hazardous groundwater contamination caused by the plant. The top court thoroughly rejected the company's arguments, vindicating the state's sovereign right to protect the life, health, and ecological environment of its citizens. Stalin commended the legal team, environmental officials, and civil society advocates whose tireless coordination secured this outcome.
Stalin reaffirmed that the Dravidian Model governance framework firmly rejects industrial growth that sacrifices human health and ecological balance. He vowed that Tamil Nadu will fiercely protect its citizens from any hazardous industrial threats.
