Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin welcomed a delegation of community leaders and residents from Thoothukudi, who arrived in Chennai to express deep gratitude for the state government's resolute legal defense resulting in the permanent closure of the polluting Sterlite copper plant. Stalin reminded the delegation that the DMK had promised in its election manifesto to ensure the definitive closure of the facility to safeguard ecological health and public safety. That solemn promise was fulfilled through rigorous legal arguments presented by the state before the Supreme Court.
Member of Parliament Kanimozhi Karunanidhi presented the delegation's additional developmental and environmental rehabilitation demands, including soil restoration, groundwater remediation, and community employment initiatives for local youth. Stalin listened carefully to each representation, giving his firm assurance that the government will review every demand with empathy and proactive administrative measures. He commended Thoothukudi citizens for their resilient, peaceful struggle to protect their homeland's natural resources and public health.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed that his administration will always prioritize public safety, clean environment, and human rights over irresponsible corporate interests. He pledged comprehensive state support to foster sustainable green industries and healthcare in Thoothukudi.
