Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin extended heartfelt congratulations to celebrated author Faustina Soosairaj, popularly known by her pen name Bama, upon being chosen for the Tamil Nadu Government's prestigious Avvaiyar Award for 2024. Stalin praised Bama for her transformative literary achievements, particularly her globally acclaimed autobiographical novel 'Karukku', which captured international attention by powerfully dissecting the intersectional oppression of caste, religion, and gender. He commended her courageous prose, which broke conventional linguistic traditions to give authentic voice to marginalized women.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the Avvaiyar Award honors women who render extraordinary service in literature, science, arts, and social reform. By selecting an uncompromising Dalit feminist writer whose work revolutionized modern Tamil literature, the Dravidian Model government reiterated its core commitment to social justice, anti-caste rationalism, and egalitarian culture. Stalin noted that literature should serve as a progressive weapon to shatter entrenched social prejudices and awaken human dignity across society.
Stalin affirmed that Bama's literary legacy will continue to inspire generations of socially conscious writers and activists. He reiterated his administration's sustained dedication to honoring revolutionary literary creators who champion equality, human rights, and social liberation.
