Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin marked National Transgender Day by welcoming a community delegation led by Dr. Riya, the first transgender union council member from Tiruchengode. Extending warm greetings, Stalin reaffirmed the state government's dedication to securing civil dignity, educational access, and sustainable economic opportunities for transgender citizens.
The Chief Minister highlighted the pioneering social welfare measures instituted by successive DMK administrations to empower the community. He noted that Tamil Nadu became the first state in India to establish a dedicated Transgender Persons Welfare Board, issue official identification cards, and provide free travel on state buses under the Vidiyal Payanam scheme. Furthermore, the government covers complete higher education tuition and hostel accommodation expenses for transgender students enrolled in public academic institutions.
Stalin called upon society to abandon prejudice and warmly embrace transgender individuals as equal citizens possessing exceptional talent and resilience. He underscored that inclusive public policies have enabled transgender professionals to enter elected local governance, academia, and healthcare. Stalin pledged that Tamil Nadu will consistently champion fundamental human rights, civil dignity, and social justice for all marginalized communities statewide.
