Chief Minister M.K. Stalin criticized the Goods and Services Tax regime as an extortionate mechanism that disproportionately burdens lower- and middle-income citizens while providing massive tax relief to corporate conglomerates. Stalin recalled that Narendra Modi strongly opposed the GST proposal as a state chief minister, claiming it could only be implemented over his dead body, before introducing it unilaterally as Prime Minister under the slogan of economic freedom.
Stalin highlighted how daily necessities, budget eateries, and local two-wheeler repairs are subjected to heavy taxation, causing middle-class families to describe the system as Gabbar Singh Tax. He pointed out the stark economic contrast where the Union government waived 1.45 lakh crore rupees in corporate taxes while showing no relief for working families.
Citing tax collection data, Stalin noted that 64 percent of GST collections originate from the bottom 50 percent of the population, 33 percent comes from the middle 40 percent, and only 3 percent is paid by the top 10 percent. He emphasized that lower-income citizens pay six times more indirect tax relative to their income, urging voters to elect the INDIA bloc to end this exploitation.
