DMK president M.K. Stalin sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for undermining India's federal structure and concentrating excessive powers in the Union government. Stalin recalled Modi's earlier assertions as a state chief minister claiming deep familiarity with regional issues, contrasting those past statements with central policies that actively curtailed financial resources for state governments.
Stalin highlighted allegations from a former NITI Aayog official indicating attempts to freeze allocations rightfully owed to states. He argued that the Union administration has systematically converted states into mere municipalities by usurping administrative powers. Citing the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi amendment legislation, Stalin pointed out how elected powers were transferred to the Lieutenant Governor, eroding democratic accountability.
The DMK leader condemned the persistent deployment of central agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax department, and Central Bureau of Investigation, against non-compliant opposition governments. Stalin accused AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami of acting as an uncritical proxy for the BJP instead of defending regional autonomy. He called upon voters to reject both parties simultaneously in the parliamentary elections to safeguard federalism and democracy.
