Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed a formal letter to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressing serious concern over reports that Kerala was constructing a check dam across the Silanthi river at Peruguva in Idukki district. The Silanthi river is an important tributary of the Amaravathi river, which flows into the Cauvery basin and serves as a vital irrigation source for farmers across Tiruppur and Karur districts.

Stalin pointed out that any construction or impounding of water in an inter-state Cauvery sub-basin without prior consultation and consent from downstream Tamil Nadu contravenes established inter-state river agreements and water tribunal awards. Unilateral obstruction of natural flows could severely restrict inflows into the Amaravathi reservoir, harming agricultural productivity, drinking water supplies, and rural livelihoods in central Tamil Nadu.

The Chief Minister requested the Kerala government to halt all construction activities on the check dam immediately until both states could inspect the site and resolve technical issues through constructive dialogue. Stalin underscored the importance of maintaining amicable inter-state cooperation while strictly honoring downstream riparian water rights and established statutory protocols for shared rivers.
