Hon'ble Union Cabinet Minister for Environment Thiru. Bhupender Yadav avl (@byadavbjp), Tamil Nadu strongly objects to the Union Govt’s consideration of Kerala’s proposal to take up a study for constructing a new dam at #MullaiPeriyar.

The existing dam has been repeatedly found to be safe, as confirmed by experts and the Hon'ble Supreme Court. Any study for a new dam is in contempt of court orders.

Considering the sensitivity of the situation, I urge you to drop this agenda item from the upcoming EAC meeting immediately.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin formally registered a strong objection with Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav over the Union government's consideration of Kerala's proposal to conduct an environmental impact assessment study for constructing a new dam at Mullaperiyar. Stalin urged the Union ministry to immediately drop the proposal from the upcoming agenda of the Expert Appraisal Committee.

The Chief Minister stressed that the existing Mullaperiyar Dam has been repeatedly evaluated and pronounced structurally sound and safe by multidisciplinary expert bodies and reaffirmed by definitive rulings of the Supreme Court of India. Stalin emphasized that entertaining any proposal or environmental study for an alternate reservoir violates the apex court's binding judgments and constitutes judicial contempt, while threatening Tamil Nadu's statutory riparian water rights.

Highlighting the acute sensitivity of the inter-state river basin, Stalin warned that unilateral regulatory actions by Union authorities undermine established federal arrangements and provoke unnecessary friction between neighboring states. He reiterated Tamil Nadu's unwavering commitment to defending its constitutional water entitlements, urging the Union government to uphold the rule of law for all states.
