Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a farmer-friendly policy decision permitting agricultural producers and pottery artisans to collect nutrient-rich desilted soil and clay from public waterbodies within their respective taluks completely free of cost. Under the streamlined system, eligible farmers, rural potters, and cottage artisans can obtain statutory extraction permits directly from local tahsildar offices through an accessible online government portal without paying fees or facing administrative hurdles.
Stalin explained that periodic desilting of irrigation tanks, ponds, and supply channels serves a dual ecological and economic purpose. Deepening water storage beds enhances rainwater harvesting capacity, improves groundwater recharge, and helps mitigate local monsoon flooding, while applying nutrient-dense silt to agricultural fields revitalizes soil fertility, decreases dependence on chemical fertilizers, and substantially lowers cultivation costs for smallholder farmers.
The Chief Minister directed district collectors and revenue officials to ensure the online application and approval process remains simple, transparent, and free from rent-seeking behavior. Stalin reaffirmed that the Dravidian Model administration remains dedicated to advancing sustainable agrarian livelihoods, conserving traditional water bodies, and supporting grassroots rural craft industries across Tamil Nadu.
