Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that the Union Ministry of Finance issued a formal gazette notification approving the issuance of a special 100-rupee commemorative coin to mark the birth centenary of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. Stalin described the official notification as a proud institutional milestone for the state government and the Dravidian movement, honoring Karunanidhi's enduring contributions to Tamil society, literature, social equality, and democratic governance over six decades.
The Chief Minister noted that the commemorative coin stands as a national tribute to a statesman who served as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister five times and played a pivotal role in shaping India's federal coalition politics. The coin's design features Karunanidhi's portrait alongside the centenary emblem, reflecting his multifaceted legacy as a pioneering social reformer, prolific author, and stalwart defender of state autonomy and constitutional rights.
Stalin expressed gratitude to Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu and state officials who coordinated with the Union government to secure the necessary statutory approvals. He emphasized that memorializing Karunanidhi's historic achievements through national numismatic honors celebrates his lifelong dedication to working-class empowerment and rationalist social transformation.
