The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a government resolution moved by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, urging the Union government to immediately conduct a caste-based census integrated with the pending national decennial census. Stalin emphasized that comprehensive, empirical demographic data is essential to design equitable affirmative action programs, evaluate reservation thresholds, and deliver targeted welfare resources to historically oppressed communities across India.

The Chief Minister asserted that the authority to carry out a statutory, nationwide census rests constitutionally with the Union government under the Census Act. Stalin pointed out that while individual states may conduct sample socioeconomic surveys, only a federally mandated census provides the binding legal validity required to protect affirmative action policies in constitutional courts and ensure proportionate legislative representation.

Stalin urged the Union administration to act without further delay, noting that the assembly resolution reflects the collective democratic demand of Tamil Nadu's citizens. He highlighted that social justice cannot advance in the dark without accurate demographic facts, reiterating that Tamil Nadu will continue advocating for empirical transparency, fair affirmative opportunities, and constitutional safeguards for all backward and marginalized communities.
