Editorial context

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution piloted by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, urging the Union government to immediately scrap the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test and restore state-controlled medical admissions based on Class 12 board examination marks. Stalin pointed out that Tamil Nadu's sustained opposition to the centralized examination is now reverberating across the country as widespread irregularities, question paper leaks, and scoring anomalies affect millions of medical aspirants nationwide.

The Chief Minister stressed that replacing state-level school evaluations with a single national entrance test has disenfranchised rural, underprivileged, and vernacular-medium students who cannot afford expensive private coaching institutes. Stalin noted that medical colleges built with state resources and taxpayer funds must serve regional healthcare priorities, rather than submitting to an inflexible national bureaucracy that undermines cooperative federalism.

Stalin called upon Chief Ministers and parliamentary opposition parties nationwide to support the assembly's decision and enact similar legislative steps in their respective states. He reiterated that Tamil Nadu remains steadfast in defending educational self-reliance, ensuring that equitable access to professional higher education is preserved as an inviolable right for future generations.
