Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued an urgent appeal to Union Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar, demanding decisive diplomatic intervention following recurring arrests of Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. Stalin firmly stated that these detained seafarers are not merely fishermen of Tamil Nadu, but citizens of India whose safety the Union Government must protect.

The Chief Minister highlighted that aggressive interceptions and boat confiscations in traditional waters have severely crippled coastal livelihoods along Rameswaram, Pudukkottai, and Nagapattinam. The prolonged impounding of costly fishing vessels causes insurmountable financial ruin to impoverished fishing families, depriving them of their daily subsistence.

Stalin urged the Ministry of External Affairs to treat the issue as an urgent national priority rather than a peripheral regional problem. He called for convening the Joint Working Group on Fisheries without delay to formulate an enduring diplomatic solution that respects traditional fishing rights in the Palk Strait.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the Union Government must secure the immediate release of all detained fishermen and boats. Stalin assured coastal communities that the state government will champion their safety.
